The Argentine Football Association (AFA) will honour Lionel Messi this weekend with a special tribute across domestic football.
Matches in all men’s and women’s divisions and disciplines will stop in the 10th minute of the first half for one minute of applause celebrating Messi’s international career.
“For the upcoming matchday across all men’s and women’s divisions and disciplines, matches will be paused in the 10th minute of the first half for a minute of applause in recognition of Lionel Messi’s career with the Argentina national team,” the AFA said.
Stadiums with video boards have also been told to play a tribute video before kick-off. The montage will also be posted on the AFA’s social media platforms.
Messi made his Argentina senior debut in 2005 and became the nation’s record scorer with 125 goals. He played at six World Cups and finally won the trophy in 2022, ending Argentina’s 36-year wait.
The 39-year-old holds World Cup records for appearances, with 34, and victories, with 23.
Announcing his retirement on Instagram, Messi wrote, “I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give.”
He added, “It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deep down — but I understand that the time has come.”
His career also featured Copa América success, cementing his place among Argentina’s greatest players.
