Kano Court Sentences Two Men To Death For Killing Housewife, Six Children

A Kano State High Court sitting in Bompai has sentenced Umar Auwalu, popularly known as Breaker, and Yakubu Dayyabu to death by hanging for killing a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children.

Justice Nasiru Saminu delivered the judgment on Friday, November 6, 2026, after finding both men guilty of the murder, which took place in Dorayi Chiranci, Kano, on January 17, 2026.

The victims were 35-year-old Fatima and her children, Maimuna, 17; Aisha, 16; Bashir, 13; Abubakar, 10; Faruk, seven; and Abdussalam, who was one and a half years old.

Each convict received seven death sentences, one for every victim, for culpable homicide punishable with death under Section 221 of the Penal Code.

The court also sentenced them to life imprisonment with hard labour for conspiracy to commit culpable homicide and armed robbery.

However, the third defendant, Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chebe or Chobe, was discharged and acquitted.

During the trial, the court heard that Auwalu gained entry into Fatima’s home after she opened the door for him, believing him to be her nephew.

The attackers allegedly locked the house and killed all seven occupants with a cutlass, club and sewing machine before escaping. Neighbours had forced their way inside after hearing cries for help but found the attackers gone.

Auwalu, identified as the group’s leader, reportedly admitted partial responsibility and begged for leniency. He also claimed that a herbalist named Thomas supplied him with incense and instructed him to continue carrying out similar attacks.
