AAU Lecturer Slumps, Dies in Edo Hotel After “Mekwe” With 21-Year-Old Woman

The Edo State Police Command is investigating the death of Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who was found dead in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, 2026. Police have arrested the hotel owner, manager and 21-year-old Angela Defa Jacob, who was reportedly with the lecturer shortly before his death.

ASP Eno Ikoedem, spokesperson for the command, said police received a report around 8pm that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged Jacob’s services.

Ikoedem said the lecturer later asked Jacob to leave the room to buy water. On returning, she reportedly found him lying lifeless and raised the alarm.

“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police,” the PPRO stated.

The police said the arrests were made to establish what happened before the lecturer’s death. His remains have been deposited at Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary pending the investigation.

AAU confirmed Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but said the incident happened outside the university and was unrelated to its official activities.

University spokesperson Otunba Aladenika also said Jacob was not a student of the institution.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
