Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel on Wednesday sentenced bus conductor Abubakar Shehu, 20, to 10 strokes of the cane for slapping a passenger during a dispute over transport fare.
Delivering judgment at the Kaduna Magistrates’ Court, Emmanuel ordered the punishment after Shehu pleaded guilty to the assault charge.
The magistrate said the court showed leniency because the convict admitted the offence and did not waste the court’s time.
Emmanuel warned Shehu against repeating such behaviour, saying the court would not treat him lightly if he committed a similar offence again.
He also ordered the convict to write an undertaking promising to maintain good behaviour from now on.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that Shehu committed the offence on July 24 at Kawo in Kaduna.
Leo said Shehu had an argument with the complainant, Hadiza Rabiu, over transport fare before slapping her twice in the face.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
