Arise TV anchor Reuben Abati has criticised President Bola Tinubu for blaming the opposition for hunger and poverty in Nigeria, insisting that the current government must take responsibility.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Abati noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been in power since 2015, while Tinubu is now in his fourth year as president. He questioned how the opposition could be blamed for hunger in 2026 when it is not in power.
His reaction followed Tinubu’s remarks at the APC campaign flag-off in Kaduna on Saturday, where the president said: “I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did. They created hunger, they created poverty. We are trying to eradicate it.”
Abati blamed the hardship on government policies, including fuel subsidy removal and the devaluation of the naira.
“You met the price of fuel at about N195, but now fuel is N1400 to N1500 per litre. That rise has caused food prices to go up. Bag of rice, garri, beans have all increased,” Abati said.
He added that a paint of garri cost around N500 when Tinubu took office but now sells for N2,500.
The Arise TV anchor urged the president to stop blaming the opposition and instead focus on reducing the cost of living as Nigerians continue to complain about rising prices.
