A six-year-old pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, Awka, Anambra State, who was swept away by floodwaters, has been found dead, 24 hours after the incident.
The boy, identified as Success Ezenwafor, was travelling to school with other pupils when the bus carrying them got trapped by floodwaters around Nibo Isiagu Ring Road in Awka South Local Government Area.
Nine others in the vehicle, including seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued alive by police operatives with help from residents. They were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for medical care.
Success was swept away and remained missing until his body was recovered the next morning.
A family spokesperson said arrangements had been completed to move his remains from the hospital to his hometown, Ula, Ekwulobia.
“With total submission to God, we announce that our little son, Success Ezenwafor, has joined the Church triumphant,” the family stated.
The incident followed heavy rainfall that flooded roads, schools, markets and other areas across the state. Two buildings and about 20 walls around Oguguo Nebe Road were also reportedly brought down.
Earlier, State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the Command’s Safe School Initiative rescued nine people after receiving a distress call.
