A teacher at Government Girls’ Day Secondary School (GGDSS), Tudun Wada, Gusau, Zamfara State, Zainab Abdullahi, has reportedly died after she was allegedly hit by a Nigerian Army vehicle said to have been driven recklessly while she was heading to school.
The accident happened on Wednesday in front of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau.
A source familiar with the incident said the Army vehicle allegedly knocked down the teacher while she was travelling on a motorcycle.
The source also alleged that the soldiers in the vehicle left the scene immediately without stopping to help or check on her condition.
“It was a Nigerian Army vehicle. They hit and killed Zainab through reckless driving. She was on her way to school when the vehicle ran over her in front of FMC Gusau. The soldiers drove off without stopping,” the source said.
The source added that Zainab later died from the injuries she suffered in the accident.
Her funeral prayer took place on Wednesday at her family home behind Man Dinawa in Gusau. Family members, colleagues, friends and sympathisers gathered to pay their final respects.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools said it received the news of her death with deep shock and sadness.
The union condemned the circumstances surrounding the incident and urged the Zamfara State Government and the Nigerian Army to carry out a full investigation into the alleged reckless driving that caused her death and ensure those responsible face justice.
“The Authority of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools received this information with great dismay and calls on the Zamfara State Government and the Nigerian Army to investigate the matter and ensure justice is done to this noble teacher,” the union stated.
The union also prayed for the late teacher, saying, “May her soul rest in peace.”
Zainab’s death has left her colleagues, students and the wider education community grieving the loss of a teacher whose life ended while on her way to work.
