The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 30-year-old Okpara Emmanuel over the alleged killing of his girlfriend, Chinyere, after an argument about allegations of who infected the other with HIV.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said Emmanuel was re-arrested by officers from the Awkunanaw Division around 6:30pm on Monday after an angry mob caught him.
According to Ndukwe, neighbours discovered the woman’s decomposing body in the suspect’s apartment and alerted the police.
Preliminary investigation showed that Emmanuel allegedly killed Chinyere on September 19, wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect allegedly killed the victim on September 19, wrapped her remains in a nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.
“The offensive odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the police,” the statement said.
Ndukwe said Emmanuel allegedly confessed during questioning, claiming he hit the woman on the head with a pestle during their argument, causing her death.
“During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, stating that the incident followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations of who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
“He further stated that, during the argument, he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, and subsequently wrapped and dumped her remains inside the toilet,” Ndukwe said.
The remains were taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while police work to identify and notify her relatives.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa ordered a discreet and thorough investigation. The suspect will be arraigned after the investigation.
Police also urged the public, especially young women, to tell trusted relatives or friends about their movements and remain careful when visiting or spending time with people.
