Three people were killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked a busy cash-crop market in Mangu town, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Friday night.
The attack happened at about 8:30 p.m., as traders and buyers were getting ready to close for the day. The shooting caused panic, sending traders and passersby running in different directions.
Bulus Dabit, President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), confirmed the incident and said the attackers fled immediately after the shooting. He said both men and women were among the victims.
Dabit said the victims had not been identified, while those injured were taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for treatment.
“At about 8 p.m. on Friday, gunmen shot several times at a vehicle leaving the vegetable market in Mangu, killing two women and a young man. The names of the victims are not known yet. Several passersby were seriously injured and were referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment,” he said.
Dabit questioned how the attack happened despite the recent deployment of hundreds of soldiers to the area after deadly attacks in parts of Mangu LGA last month.
He called on security agencies to use technology and better intelligence to locate and arrest suspected attackers before they strike again.
