Two police officers have been killed after suspected armed herders reportedly ambushed the entourage of the Divisional Police Officer in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack happened on Monday evening, just days after four policemen and seven residents were reportedly killed by suspected herders in the same community.
Community sources told our correspondent on Tuesday that the DPO had travelled to Makurdi on official duty and was returning to Ayilamo when the group came under attack.
A source, who spoke anonymously, said the victims were among the newly deployed Mobile Police officers in the area.
He said, “At about 6pm on Monday, some newly deployed Mobile Police officers to Ayilamo community were attacked and killed.
“The incident occurred while the officers were on their way from Ayilamo to escort the Divisional Police Officer, who was returning to the community from Makurdi.”
The latest attack came barely four days after suspected armed herders attacked Ayilamo, killing four police officers and seven residents.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, said two officers in the DPO’s entourage were killed.
Aondongu said, “The DPO came to Makurdi to collect some things, and while returning to Ayilamo, he was attacked and lost two of his men in the attack.”
