The death toll from suspected consumption of herbal drinks in parts of Ondo State’s Odigbo Local Government Area has risen to 30, while 50 others are receiving treatment in hospitals, Vanguard confirmed.
The deaths were reported in Odigbo town, Newtown, Orita and Araromi-Obu. The state government has ordered a halt to the sale and consumption of locally produced alcohol and suspected concoctions in the affected areas.
Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, said the cause remains unknown, while preliminary tests ruled out viral and bacterial infections. He said some victims may have consumed alcohol mixed with an unidentified substance.
“We have not confirmed the source of death. Investigations are still ongoing,” he said.
Samples are being tested, while blood, urine and post-mortem examinations will help investigators. Ajaka said casualty figures remain unverified and warned against unregulated drinks.
Odigbo council chairman, Taiwo Adegoroye, ordered the ban, deployed medical teams and said suspected sellers were arrested. Three bodies were deposited for autopsy, while a coroner’s inquest was sought.
Police said investigations and toxicological examinations were ongoing and urged calm.
The government also warned against unapproved medicines and substances, urging residents to use authorised outlets and report suspicious activities.
