Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has urged Nigerians not to vote for the party in 2027 if its candidates cannot prove they have the capacity to deliver.
Amaechi spoke on Monday during a panel session at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 2026 Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The former minister said voters should focus on competence and proven results instead of ethnic, regional or personal ties when choosing candidates.
“ADC provides a different kind of leadership completely. If we can’t perform, don’t vote for us,” Amaechi said.
He asked Nigerians to examine candidates’ records and judge them based on their past performance in public office rather than their ethnic background.
“A coalition should be based on performance,” he said.
“Assess us by our last performance and choose; not just vote because you are from Ikwerre or Omoku and choose your candidate,” he added.
Amaechi also admitted that efforts by opposition parties to form a united front against the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election face serious challenges.
He blamed the problem on politicians’ unwillingness to put aside personal ambitions for a common goal.
“Coalition as it is today is difficult to achieve. If it is possible, I am sure that Vice President Atiku Abubakar would be willing to participate. But the difficulty in it is that everybody has ambition; nobody wants to give up,” he said.
Amaechi said personal interests have made it hard for opposition leaders to agree on a single candidate.
“There are very few politicians who are in love with Nigeria. What the politicians are doing is to just come in and milk the country dry,” Amaechi alleged.
Representing ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar at the conference, Amaechi also defended his record as Rivers governor, citing projects completed during his tenure as proof of his performance.
