Cooking gas prices have started falling in several states, giving relief to many households that have struggled with rising energy costs over the past year.
Checks in Kano, Oyo and Lagos showed that the retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also called cooking gas, has dropped due to better local supply, higher imports and lower wholesale prices.
In Kano, LPG now sells for between N1,400 and N1,600 per kilogram, depending on the filling station. Most outlets sell between N1,500 and N1,550, while Alfa Tashir Filling Station charges about N1,600. Prices had earlier risen to between N1,700 and N1,800 per kilogram, taking the cost of refilling a 6kg cylinder above N10,000. Still, some residents said they have not noticed the reduction.
“I hardly refill my cylinder now. I only buy N5,000 worth of gas whenever I run out because the prices became too high,” said food vendor Isa Abubakar. Abdullahi Jalal said, “My hope is that the price drops further. Cooking gas is faster and more convenient, especially for preparing breakfast before the children go to school, but the cost forces many families to rely on charcoal.”
In Ibadan, prices have dropped to between N1,350 and N1,500 per kilogram from N1,800 to N2,000 a month ago. Dealer Bayo said, “Sales have improved because of the reduction in price. We hope it falls further so more households will switch back to cooking gas.”
Lagos residents said prices now range between N1,500 and N1,550 per kilogram, though many still buy smaller quantities. “The increase affected my budget seriously. I don’t cook as often anymore because I have to make the gas last,” Lola Dahunsi said.
Industry experts linked the drop to stronger local supply, increased imports and lower depot prices. The Federal Government has also removed import duty and VAT on cooking gas, while NLNG has stopped LPG exports and now supplies all its production to the local market.
