20 Killed, Many Injured in Plateau Highway Crash as Truck Suffers Brake Failure

At least 20 people were killed and many others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash at Hawan Kibo in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Friday evening.

The crash happened around 5pm and involved a truck and other vehicles. The incident caused confusion in the area as residents and motorists rushed to help those affected.

Community sources said several people were trapped inside the vehicles, while injured victims were taken away from the scene for treatment.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, confirmed the incident and blamed it on brake failure.

He said the truck’s faulty braking system caused the crash involving the truck and other vehicles.

“The crash was caused by brake failure.” he said.

Ogungbemi said FRSC personnel rescued many of the injured victims and took them to hospitals for medical attention.

He urged motorists to properly inspect and maintain their vehicles before travelling, especially their braking systems and other key components.

The FRSC commander expressed concern over the deaths and injuries recorded, advising motorists to drive carefully and fix mechanical problems before taking their vehicles onto the highway.
