The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man identified only as Godwin for allegedly defiling two girls in Ogale, Eleme Local Government Area.
The man was arrested on Monday after the parents of the victims — girls aged 13 and 11 — filed a formal complaint with operatives of the Eleme Police Division. The father of the older girl, Cletus (other names withheld), described how the suspect reportedly worked his way into the children’s trust.
According to him, the suspect’s method was to send the two children on an errand and later invite them into his room after they returned with the item he had asked them to buy. “Then he (suspect) will lock the door, turn up the volume of his music and assault the children.”
Cletus also said the man threatened to harm the girls if they told anyone what had happened.
When contacted, Rivers police spokesman Blessing Agabe confirmed Godwin is in custody and that inquiries are ongoing. Agabe said the police gave the parents a medical form to have the girls examined but were still waiting for the results.
“Yes, I can confirm the arrest of the suspect. He is in our custody. However, the police issued a medical form to allow the girls to undergo an examination.
“As I speak to you, we are still waiting for the results because they will show if there was penetration and so on. If that happens, then we (the Police) will transfer the case to the appropriate bureau.
“So we are still investigating, and the form we have issued is part of that investigation.”
