Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru at the age of 57 on Friday, October 23, 2026.
Fans and colleagues took to social media to pay tribute to the late actor, praising his talent, humility and role as a mentor. Many also shared old pictures of him as Ahanna in the classic Nollywood film Rattlesnake and offered prayers for his wife and surviving children.
The news came as a shock to many because Duru had dismissed viral videos and rumours about a terminal illness just months earlier, assuring friends that he was getting stronger.
Filmmakers and producers also praised his professionalism. Amid the grief, some called for stronger unity and better welfare support for Nollywood actors as the industry mourns another veteran star.
Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, was among the first to confirm the death and pay tribute to Duru online.
In an emotional post, he wrote: “Another great thespian gone…. Rest in peace Francis Duru!!”
Reacting to the sad news, Yomi Casual wrote: ”Lord!!!! please have mercy on us all,” while Kunle Remi stated: ”God please comfort his family,”
Linda Ejiofor also expressed her shock, saying: ”Ohhhh nooo. May his soul rest in peace,”
Throughout his career, Duru received several awards and honours for his contributions to the Nigerian film industry. He was also named a United Nations ambassador of peace in recognition of his influence on young people.
