Police Arrest Fake Lawyer After 11 Years Of Practice In Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested Ugwumba Enyinnaya for allegedly posing as a lawyer and practising illegally for over 11 years.

The police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, announced the arrest in a statement on Tuesday. He said the case followed a petition accusing the suspect of obtaining money through false pretence.

According to the police, Enyinnaya allegedly collected ₦650,000 from Chukwu David in March 2026, claiming he would help process and secure approval for street naming in Ohaozara Local Government Area.

The petitioner said the suspect presented himself as an experienced lawyer. However, police investigations reportedly showed that he had been posing as a legal practitioner without being qualified.

The statement added that Enyinnaya admitted during questioning that he was not a lawyer.

A search of his apartment reportedly uncovered several items linked to the alleged crime.

“A search of his apartment led to the recovery of several exhibits, including a Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal; a portrait of the suspect dressed in barrister’s regalia; purported Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree certificates for the suspect bearing the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology; a barrister’s robe and wig; judgements allegedly procured from the court and various legal documents allegedly prepared by him, including powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance,” the statement said.

The police confirmed that the suspect had been charged to court.

The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Hope Okafor, praised the officers involved and urged the public to verify the credentials of legal service providers and report suspicious activities to the police.
