Yobe Court Sentences Man to Death by Hanging for Killing Wife

A Yobe State High Court in Damaturu has sentenced 45-year-old Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.

Musa was arrested on January 4, 2024, after his wife died at New Bra-Bra Estate in Damaturu. He was later charged with culpable homicide, according to media reports.

The former Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the police received a distress call at about 4:48 a.m. that day through the ‘C’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu.

According to Abdulkarim, the couple were on the same bed when Mamman was allegedly attacked on the neck with a sharp object. She suffered severe bleeding and died.

Musa was arrested for questioning, while the homicide unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department began investigating the incident.

The case was later heard at High Court 1 in Damaturu. The judge reportedly ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Mamman’s death also saddened the Yobe State University community, where she worked. A February 2024 university newsletter said Vice-Chancellor Professor Mala Mohammed Daura mourned her death and urged security agencies to bring those responsible to justice. She was buried in Potiskum on January 9, 2024.

The Women-led Civil Society Organizations Network in Yobe State condemned the killing, identifying Mamman as a volunteer with one of its member organisations.

Governor Mai Mala Buni also sent condolences to her family and called for an investigation, promising that anyone found responsible would face the law.

A lawyer said Musa could appeal the judgment within the period allowed by law.
