At least 30 suspected commercial sex workers have been arrested in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, after security operatives found suspected illicit drugs at an unapproved building being used as a guest house.
The arrests followed a joint operation involving the Commissioner for Capital City Development and Urban Planning, Richard Ugo Idike, the Commissioner for Internal Security, Prince Etta Uka Ude, security operatives and members of the ministry’s task force.
Speaking to journalists during an inspection of the facility, Idike raised concerns about the security risks linked to activities at the building.
He said the presence of people reportedly coming from different states had raised serious questions about public safety in the area.
“The presence of individuals reportedly drawn from different states within an unapproved facility raises critical security and public safety concerns for the area” Idike stated
During the operation, enforcement officers also found substances suspected to be hard drugs, including wrappers containing local variants known as ‘Colos’ and Indian hemp.
The suspected drugs were immediately seized by security operatives, who also secured the building.
The operation was carried out as authorities raised concerns about the activities taking place at the unapproved facility and the possible security threats they posed to the surrounding area.
