President Bola Tinubu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council to handle campaign activities across Nigeria, saying he must focus on governance and the country’s financial needs ahead of the 2027 general election.
Tinubu spoke on Wednesday during the council’s inauguration in Abuja. He said Nigeria needed more attention from him and agreed that campaign demands should not affect his duties as president.
“You’ve warned me not to allow the rigour of the campaign to distract me from governance, I hear you. I am in full agreement with your decision. Nigeria needs more attention now,” Tinubu said.
He also explained why he would not attend every campaign event, pointing to government bills and foreign financial obligations.
“So, you will excuse me from going everywhere with you, we have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait,” the President said.
Tinubu said his administration also wanted investors willing to stay in Nigeria and invest in the future of its children.
“We want those investors to come in, be here to stay, to invest for the future of our children,” he said.
However, he promised to speak directly with Nigerians while the council led campaigns across states and local government areas.
He described the inauguration as a renewed commitment to Nigerians and said the council would present the government’s vision, records and plans to voters nationwide.
Tinubu also praised APC members for completing the party’s congresses despite predictions of internal crisis.
“ They said there will be implosion. We passed through it. We did not fail. You didn’t let us down. We got here together,” he said.
