Police in Ogun State have nabbed a man, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly posing as a popular cleric on Facebook and swindling people out of millions of Naira. The suspect was picked up by operatives of the Ilaro Division.
The arrest came after one Muyiwa Akogun, known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun,” filed a report on October 3. He told police that people had been complaining about fraud being carried out in his name through a fake Facebook profile.
The Divisional Police Officer at Ilaro Division quickly sent out intelligence and detective operatives. Using tech monitoring and intelligence analysis, they tracked the suspect to a nearby village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis. He was arrested there.
Under tough questioning, the suspect confessed. He admitted to impersonating the real Prophet Akogun on Facebook. He said he used the cleric’s identity to give fake prophecies and offer prayer services to vulnerable people. His victims were in Nigeria and abroad.
Early findings show he targeted people looking for spiritual help on the prophet’s Facebook page. He would gain their trust and then fleece them. The total haul is over N18 million.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest. He said the suspect has been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta. There, police will dig deeper to find out how far the crime goes, identify possible accomplices and push for prosecution.
