Workers Declare Three-Day Warning Strike Over Economic Hardship, Poverty

Public service workers under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have begun a three-day warning strike over what the council described as growing economic and mental hardship affecting workers and their dependants.

The action is scheduled to run from midnight on Friday, October 2, to Sunday, October 4, 2026, with the council directing its national and state leaders to mobilise workers.

A circular dated October 1 and signed by the JNPSNC National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga, said the decision followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to requests sent to President Bola Tinubu in a September 21, 2026 letter.

The council said, “Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight of Friday, 2nd October, 2026, to Sunday, October 4th, 2026.”

It directed workers in federal, state and local government services to join the action, saying, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of Federal, State and Local Governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”

The council added, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

Its earlier demands include petrol at N500 per litre, an immediate wage award and a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

It said, “The time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now!!!”

The circular ended: “Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!”
