The family of late singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, says its fresh request for a full reinvestigation into his death has been approved by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu and sent to the Lagos State Police Command.
The family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, disclosed this in a statement dated September 29, 2026.
Ogungbe said the family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and it was received at Force Headquarters, Abuja, on May 7. He said the petition raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and sought a full forensic reconstruction of Mohbad’s death.
The matter was later assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau. A family representative has also met with the new investigators.
“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter,” he said.
The clarification came after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25. The suit, filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, sought to force the police to reopen the case.
Ogungbe said the suit was not filed by the family or with its approval.
“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement said.
The family said it would keep assisting investigators with documents, information and witnesses.
It also said it was not seeking to prejudge the outcome or engage in “trial by media”.
“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues,” the statement concluded.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, aged 27. His remains were later exhumed for an autopsy.
