Commuters and residents gathered on the Lagos highway on Wednesday morning after a truck loaded with crates of beer crashed near Abalti Barracks toward Ojuelegba.
The Fuso truck was involved in a multi-vehicle crash with a Lexus SUV, a Hyundai SUV and a commercial motorcycle. The vehicles were damaged, but no death was recorded at the scene.
The crash destroyed several plastic crates, leaving thousands of bottles scattered across the busy road. Rather than stay away, passersby, commercial drivers and nearby residents moved toward the truck to collect the undamaged drinks.
Some people opened the surviving bottles and drank by the roadside, while others used plastic buckets and containers to scoop up the beer that had spilled onto the road.
The crowd soon caused a traffic jam along the busy route.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived after the crash to control the crowd and prevent further accidents.
LASTMA officials later cordoned off the area, stopped the looting and oversaw the removal of broken bottles and other debris from the highway.
Normal traffic flow has since returned to the axis.
