Arrested Killer of UNIBEN Student Transferred to Another Prison After Initiating Fellow Inmates into Secret Cult

Kingsley Ogbonnaya, the murder suspect standing trial over the 2020 killing of University of Benin undergraduate Chinenye Promise Nwoye, has been moved from Awka Correctional Centre to Ekwulobia Correctional Centre in Anambra State.

Ogbonnaya was reportedly transferred after he was found initiating fellow inmates into his cult group and engaging in other unruly behaviours at the Awka facility.

A source familiar with the matter said the transfer has affected the progress of the case. Ogbonnaya must now be taken from Ekwulobia to Awka whenever he is needed in court, which could make his court appearances more expensive.

“The last time I went to Ekwulobia, I saw him there. He is still there. This movement has stalled the trial in court,” the source said.

The source also said Ogbonnaya could be moved to a correctional centre outside Anambra if he continues the behaviour at Ekwulobia.

Francis Ekezie, Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, confirmed the transfer. He said Ogbonnaya was moved as part of administrative proceedings.

Ekezie, however, assured that the suspect would be taken to court whenever he is needed for the continuation of his trial.
