The University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has begun an indefinite strike over the alleged failure to implement the Federal Government-ASUU agreement signed in December 2025.
The branch chairperson, Professor Omeh Obasi Ngwoke, said the action was also linked to alleged illegalities within the university.
Ngwoke said the union had met with the university management several times and remained patient while waiting for its outstanding salaries to be paid in full, in line with federal government directives.
But he said the continued non-payment had become too much, leaving the union with no choice but to strike.
“What we are being owed is far greater than what we receive; we just have to resolute the revolution of Congress, so we have activated indefinite local strike in the University of Port Harcourt,” he said.
The UNIPORT ASUU chairman also said members were living in abject poverty, adding that some had lost their lives because of the unpaid salaries.
The union said the strike would continue until the university meets its demands and stops violating federal government orders and directives.
