Former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai has spoken out over his continued detention as he marks 212 days in custody.
In a post shared on his official social media pages on Wednesday, El-Rufai wrote: “Today Exactly 212 Days @elrufai in Detention,” adding, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere. Injustice anywhere is a threat to Democracy everywhere.”
A flyer shared on his Facebook page showed him dressed in a white suit, black shirt and white hat. It carried the message: “Detention must never become punishment before judgement. Due process is not privilege.”
El-Rufai has been in detention since February 18 over a probe by the anti-graft agency into alleged N432 billion money laundering. The probe followed a petition from the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said the former governor remains in custody based on a court remand order.
He was briefly released in March to attend his late mother’s burial. However, in an interview, El-Rufai admitted that he had tapped the telephone of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
