FG Opens UK Commonwealth Scholarship For Nigerians – See How To Apply

Qualified Nigerian university graduates have been invited to apply for the 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan, with the deadline set for October 20, 2026.

The scholarship notice was shared by the Lagos State Scholarship Board and issued by the Federal Ministry of Education’s Department of Scholarship Awards, formerly the Federal Scholarship Board. It was signed by Dr Folake Olatunji-David, Director Overseeing the Office of PSE, for the Minister of Education.

The UK-based scholarships cover a one-year taught Master’s programme or doctoral studies lasting up to three years.

Master’s applicants must hold a first degree with at least a Second Class Upper Division. PhD applicants need a relevant Master’s degree and at least a Second Class Lower Division in their first degree.

Applicants in both categories must have admission from at least two UK institutions. PhD candidates must also provide a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor.

NYSC participation is also required.

“Applications will be assessed on Academic merit, Development impact on completion and Quality of Study plan,” the notice said.

Applications must be completed through the Electronic Application System, with passport photos, transcripts, birth certificates and UK admission letters uploaded.

Applicants must submit the form online by October 20, 2026, then download, print and submit a hard copy at the interview venue.

Foreign certificates require official translation and evaluation.

Study proposals should reflect Nigeria’s development needs, including education, health, economic growth, governance, climate, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, and humanitarian emergencies.
