The Nigerian Army has disclosed an attempted unauthorised takeover of its official X account, the second cyber incident involving a Nigerian military social media platform in about two weeks.
The account started posting memecoin-related updates around 3:50pm on Saturday before the Army identified the activity as a cybersecurity incident.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, confirmed the incident in a statement shared on the Army’s official Facebook page.
“The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account,” she said.
According to Anele, immediate technical and protective steps were taken to secure the account, block further unauthorised access and protect the integrity of information shared on the platform.
“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” she said.
The Army asked the public to ignore any “suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content” posted on the account. It also urged media organisations to confirm information through its other official communication channels.
It remained unclear whether full control had been restored, as the last visible post was published before the reported breach.
The incident follows a similar cyberattack on the Defence Headquarters’ official X account about two weeks earlier. On August 15, Defence Information Director Samaila Uba said technical measures had been taken to secure the account and stop further unauthorised access.
The latest incident has raised fresh concerns over the security of military communication platforms.
