Four officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun Corps, were reportedly killed in an ambush by suspected criminals in Akure North Local Government Area.
However, the Corps confirmed that two of its personnel died in the attack.
The Corps spokesperson, Jimoh Adeniken, said the incident happened as the officers were leaving their operational base along the Ago-Oyinbo farming area, around Ala Daadaa in Akure North.
According to him, the officers were suddenly attacked by gunmen, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
“Despite the bravery and resistance put up by the officers, one sustained fatal injuries and two unfortunately lost their lives,” Adeniken said. “They paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.”
He said reinforcements were quickly sent to the area to track the attackers and bring them to justice.
The Corps has also increased patrols, security operations and intelligence gathering in the area to stop further attacks and reassure residents.
Adeniken said the Ondo State Governor, the Corps Commander and the management condoled with the families, colleagues and loved ones of the officers.
“We salute their courage, sacrifice and commitment to the protection of the people of Ondo State,” it read.
The families of the deceased thanked the Ondo State Government and Amotekun leadership for giving the officers a befitting burial. They also asked the government to consider their relatives for future recruitment into the Corps.
Adeniken said Amotekun remains determined and will not be discouraged by the attack.
“In conjunction with other security agencies, we will continue to protect lives and property and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.
The Corps urged residents, especially those in farming communities, to stay alert and share credible information with security agencies to help arrest the attackers.
