Imo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Bernard Ikeagwuoha, says the state is now producing drones and Android phones at the Imo Digital City.
Ikeagwuoha, who represented Governor Hope Uzodimma at an international conference organised by the Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria in Owerri, said the government is also building what it described as Africa’s largest computer village.
Speaking on education in an AI-driven world, he said every student needs digital skills, including problem-solving abilities. He urged Nigerians to embrace and develop Artificial Intelligence for national growth.
The commissioner also said Imo has the highest literacy rate in Nigeria and that every family in the state has at least one graduate. He said the government’s heavy investment in the digital city and computer village was driven by the importance of education in the state.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Asheesh Srivastava of Banaras Hindu University, said India and Nigeria should work together to advance technology. He stressed that technology is a tool, while teachers must remain in control of how it is used.
Prof. Sunny Daniel Osaat, President of the institute, said education must focus on four areas: skills, employability, ethics and sustainability. He called for education leaders and AI stakeholders to redesign learning systems for future needs.
The institute’s Registrar/CEO, Dr Taiwo Olufumilayo Olusa, said AI is changing education and leadership, urging educators to use it responsibly and ethically for humanity’s benefit.
