Argentina defender Nicolas Tagliafico has blamed exhaustion, poor pitch conditions and high temperatures linked to television scheduling for the Albiceleste’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final defeat to Spain.
Argentina had been pushed into extra time twice in their four knockout games before the final. They came from two goals down in the final 11 minutes against Egypt in the Round of 16 and recovered from a goal behind in the final five minutes of their semi-final against England.
Messi and his teammates beat Cabo Verde 3-2 in extra time before defeating Egypt by the same score. They then needed extra time to beat 10-man Switzerland 3-1 in the quarter-finals before edging England 2-1 in the semis.
Spain, meanwhile, had played less football, conceded just once in their four knockout matches and had an extra day to prepare. They eventually won the final 1-0 after extra time.
“I do not wish for this to be perceived as excuses, but we arrived at the final both physically and mentally drained,” Tagliafico remarked (according to Albiceleste Talk).
“Spain performed exceptionally well and rightfully earned their victory. We did not play well. The pitch for the final was inadequate. MetLife was dry, and the heat was intense, compounded by our early kickoff due to television considerations.
“We must recall that spirit, the determination we exhibited in our relentless pursuit. It was remarkable. Against Egypt, I genuinely believed we were in dire straits. I thought, ‘What now?’
“Yet, we demonstrated resilience to persist, perhaps without any extraordinary displays, but with sheer heart. Enduring each match in that manner is incredibly taxing.”
Argentina failed to register a shot on target, while Emiliano Martinez made a record 12 saves. Even after Enzo Fernandez was sent off in stoppage time, Martinez kept them in the game before substitute Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute.
