The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has turned down the nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 election filed by the Taminu Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Earlier, the PDP faction said it had submitted Jonathan’s nomination, along with the names of its governorship, National Assembly and state assembly candidates, to INEC.
The group said it made the submission manually after it was denied access to INEC’s electronic nomination portal.
But INEC, through its Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, rejected the submission.
Eta-Messi said candidate nominations can only be made through the commission’s approved online portal, in line with its rules and guidelines.
She stressed that INEC does not accept manual submission of candidates.
“Submission is only done on a dedicated portal as stipulated by our regulations and guidelines please,” she said.
INEC’s decision means the nomination submitted by the Turaki faction will not be accepted and leaves fresh questions over the status of the candidates presented by the group.
