The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested 70 suspects after a video alleging a robbery around Unity Fountain in Maitama went viral.
The arrests followed a directive from the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, for an immediate and wide raid of criminal black spots around Unity Fountain and nearby areas.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said officers from the Maitama Division carried out coordinated raids at identified criminal flashpoints, leading to the arrests.
“Following preliminary screening and due process, thirty (30) of the suspects were screened and released, while forty (40) suspects were retained in custody for further investigation,” Ms Adeh said.
She added that the victim later identified two of the suspects as people he recognised from the incident.
“The identified suspects, alongside other persons retained in custody, are currently in custody, while investigations are being expanded to identify and apprehend any other person(s) who may be connected to the offence,” she said.
The police said the investigation is still ongoing as officers work to find anyone else linked to the alleged robbery.
The command urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious people, movements or activities to the nearest police station or call 08032003913 or 08061581938.
