The Nigerian Army has assured Nigerians that its personnel will remain neutral, professional and guided by the Constitution when deployed to support civil authorities during the 2027 elections.
Brig.-Gen. Friday Onu, Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, gave the assurance on Thursday in Abeokuta during a sensitisation lecture on military conduct during the polls.
Onu said the exercise was aimed at reminding personnel of their constitutional duties and ensuring they remain apolitical, non-partisan and disciplined before, during and after the election.
He said troops deployed for election duties would support lead internal security agencies in providing a safe and peaceful environment for voters.
The training covered the Defence Headquarters’ code of conduct, relevant sections of the Electoral Act 2022 and rules of engagement.
“The Nigerian Army remains apolitical, non-partisan, and professional at all times. Army leadership maintains zero tolerance for political bias, operational overreach, and indiscipline. Any breach of guidelines will not be tolerated,” Onu warned.
The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, commended the Army for involving sister security agencies, saying joint efforts were needed to handle election security.
“Our collective conduct must strengthen public confidence and demonstrate that the security institutions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remain loyal to the constitution and to all Nigerians,” he said.
Guest Lecturer, Col. Olusegun Oladuntoye (Rtd), said the seminar was meant to reinforce the military’s role in democracy.
